Leading yourself and others through transition

Everything is changing.
What if you get this wrong?

Nobody knows where this is going. You still have to decide.

Nobody can see the destination right now. What holds is the power no one can take from you: your character, your judgement, your word.

I help you see the power you hold, and use it well.

For leaders in transition, and the organisations and boards behind them.

Both complimentary. The assessment takes 7 minutes; a conversation, 30. Confidential, no obligation.

The crossroads

Life has always been full of transitions. Now they are arriving all at once.

Wars. Rising costs. AI. Institutions that no longer hold. Organisations are being forced to change, and so are the people in them.

  • Stepping up
  • Restructured
  • Made redundant
  • Leaving corporate
  • Scaling a business
  • Transforming a business
  • Facing AI

Whatever your crossroads, the hardest part is the not knowing: what comes next, whether you are making the right call, and who you can say that to. Underneath it all are the questions you can’t say out loud:

Am I still the right person for this? Who am I now?

I can’t take the uncertainty away. I can help you stand steady in it, trust your own judgement again, and decide what to do next.

In every transition, power shifts. Character decides how you hold it. Courage decides what you do with it.

How coaching works

Bespoke, from the first conversation.

Every change is felt in three places: in you, in your team, and in the people you need to bring with you. You choose where to start. My part is helping you see clearly what this change is for, and the first move that follows. The choice is always yours. You do the building, and I walk alongside you.

01

You, in the change

Who are you in this change, what is it asking of you, and what needs to change in you? One to one, at your pace.

02

Your team, in the change

How is your team meeting this change? How do you align, get ready and communicate through it together? I work with you, then with each member of your team on their own, then with the whole team.

03

The people you need to bring through the change

Beyond your team: the people you don’t manage but can’t succeed without. We work out whom you need to influence, engage and align with, and how. I help you prepare; the conversations are yours.

Running through all three: making sense of the change. Where you are in it, where your people are, what the storm around you is doing, and what is genuinely yours to act on.

Start here

A first conversation

30 minutes to talk through what you want from this change, and whether we’re the right fit. Complimentary and confidential.

Stage one

Design

We agree what this change is for, what success looks like and your first move, starting with your Transition Profile: a structured look at your ground, your seven pillars and the weather.

Stage two

Coach

A six-session Focus or a twelve-session Sprint, each over three months.

Stage three

Review

You retake your Transition Profile to see what has moved, and decide your next move.

Between sessions: time to reflect. Every session ends with a question to take away. In the quiet afterwards, as you reflect on what we explored, the real shift often comes.

Board, advisory and workshop work starts the same way: a first conversation, shaped around your board, your team or your event.

How we work together

Foundations That Hold

Transitions don’t test what you know. They test who you are.

What holds you through a transition?

When everything is moving at once, it’s hard to see what is actually giving way. Sitting with leaders at their crossroads, and standing at my own, I kept seeing the same shape. Everyone stands on the same ground: their mindset. Seven pillars carry the weight of the change. And above them is the weather, the storm they cannot control. Usually one or two pillars have given way, and the rest are working twice as hard to make up for it. Sit with each question. Which one stops you?

The ground you stand on

Mindset

Is the chaos of this transition running you, or are you choosing how you meet it?

In chaos, the mind reaches for threat. But victory is not an outcome; it is a mindset. How you see the crossroads shapes how you cross it. Everything else stands on it.

The weather

The outer storm

How much of your energy is going on things you can’t control, and how little is left for what you can?

Why it matters

Wars, the economy, AI, a restructure or a redundancy you didn't choose: much of any transition is decided somewhere else. The storm is real, and so is the noise. We build perspective: telling what you can influence from what you can't, cutting out the noise, and putting your power where it counts. You can't stop the storm. You can do something about how you stand in it. It is not a pillar: it is the weather over all of them.

01

Inner authority and stewardship

Whose voice is really making your decisions right now? And are you ready to own what you choose?

Why it matters

Everyone has a view on the choices in front of you, and the louder they get, the harder it is to hear your own. We find your centre again, so you choose for yourself, own the consequences, and hold your power on behalf of others.

02

Alignment

Are your choices still true to what you value? And can you bring the people around you with you, without losing yourself?

Why it matters

Alignment starts on the inside. When your decisions line up with your values, they hold together, and people can trust them. Then it reaches outwards. Change splits teams and organisations, and you feel the pull from every side. We get clear on what you stand for, then find the shared direction with the people around you, working through the disagreement rather than around it.

03

Confidence

When did you start doubting the person who got you here?

Why it matters

Transitions are full of ambiguity, and certainty rarely arrives in time. We build the confidence to trust your judgement anyway: discerning what you can know, making the best call you can, and letting go of what you cannot control.

04

Readiness

Are you preparing for what is coming, or hoping you will work it out when it arrives?

Why it matters

Every new chapter asks for something the last one did not. We name it early and prepare for it, so it does not ambush you halfway through.

05

Capability

What is this transition asking of you that you have never had to create before?

Why it matters

Transitions ask for new thinking, not more of the same, and as AI reshapes work, that means doubling down on what only humans bring. We find the skills, creativity and support this moment needs, so it becomes doable rather than heroic.

06

Engagement

Have you quietly checked out, and not admitted it, even to yourself?

Why it matters

Checking out is often how we protect ourselves when change wears us down. We reconnect you with what matters, so you, and the people around you, can choose to be all in.

07

Communication

In all this uncertainty, what do people need to hear from you that you are afraid to say?

Why it matters

In big change, messages get polished until nobody believes them, and the hard things go unsaid. Sometimes you can’t say everything: legal and confidential limits are real. But you can always say something true: what you know, what you don’t know yet, what you can’t share and why, and when you will. We find your own voice for the hard conversations, honest and human within the limits you hold, and build the trust that brings the truth back to you.

Get to know me

Different seats. Different lenses.

An insider’s experience, with an outsider’s eyes.

An insider’s experience

  • Started as a trainee at Deloitte in 1995. Chartered accountant.
  • Led strategic transformation, audit and risk at SABMiller plc across 80 countries, and audit and risk at Travelex across 40.
  • Former boards: Grant Thornton UK, Great Western Hospitals NHS FT and WorldSkills UK.
  • Independent non-executive director, BSW Hospitals Group: chairing the Group Risk and Assurance Committee, and sitting on the Audit and Remuneration Committees.
  • Trustee and board member at Blossom, a charity, chairing its Risk and Finance Committee.

I know how power works at the top table, and what it asks of the people who hold it.

An outsider’s eyes

  • Grew up under apartheid, in a country where the law decided which rooms I could walk into.
  • Rarely fitted the mould. Found my own way into rooms that were not built for people like me.
  • Different when I would rather have blended in, and learned to navigate it on my own terms.
  • Recognised in the Financial Times’ 2014 list of the top 100 LGBTQ+ leaders, for my work on inclusion.

It taught me to see what others miss, and to meet people with real empathy.

What that means for you

I bring the strategy and the people into the same conversation, and I listen for what sits beneath them.

  1. 01

The strategy, the governance and the numbers

Where the decision really sits, who is accountable for it, what the risk is, and what is at stake if it goes wrong.

  2. 02

    The room

What people feel, what they fear, and what they leave unsaid.

  3. 03

    The quieter voice underneath

What you already know to be right, before you can prove it.

So you don’t need one person for the numbers and another for the people. It all happens in the same conversation, with rigour and with empathy.

My story

Two ways of knowing

Evidence and intuition. Held together.

I trained as a chartered accountant. Logic, reason and evidence are my default. Over the years I learned that the evidence never tells you everything.

EvidenceThe numbersThe strategyThe riskLogic and reasonIntuitionEmpathyReading the roomYour inner voiceWhat goes unsaidBetterjudgement
DiscernmentSeeing what is really going on
Inner authorityTrusting your own judgement
WisdomJudgement, deepened by experience

With a boardI read the papers and I read the room, so you see the real risk and hear the bad news early, and I challenge constructively, so the decisions that reach you are ones you can stand behind.

With a leaderI help you read what the data says and hear what your own judgement already knows, so the next move is yours, and one you can stand behind.

Competence builds your career. Character decides what you do with it.
